Sutton-in-Ashfield is about four miles from our base in Mansfield, which makes it one of the closest towns we cover and one of the easiest for us to reach at short notice. The whole of NG17 is inside our normal working area.
Sutton's housing came up the same way Mansfield's did, on coal and on hosiery, and it leaves the same set of heating problems behind. There are long rows of Victorian and Edwardian terraces around the town centre and out through Stanton Hill and Skegby, where the original water main coming in from the boundary is often narrow and sometimes still part lead. That matters more than people expect: a combi boiler needs a certain flow rate to work properly, and in a lot of these houses the supply is the limiting factor rather than the boiler. We measure the pressure and flow at the incoming main before recommending anything, because fitting a combi onto a supply that cannot feed it is how you end up with a shower that runs cold every time somebody uses a tap.
The large post-war estates are a different job again. Most were built with a conventional system, a cylinder in the airing cupboard and a tank in the loft, and a good number still have one. Those are usually good candidates for conversion. The newer development around Huthwaite and out towards the A38 tends to be straightforward combi work, except where the original builder fitted the smallest boiler that would pass building control and the house has since gained an extension or a second bathroom.
We cover the town centre, Stanton Hill, Skegby, Huthwaite, Fackley, Sutton Lawn and the streets around King's Mill. Our hours are eight to five, Monday to Friday.
