Water supply questions

Why is my water pressure so bad upstairs?

It can be the supply, the internal pipework, a partially closed stopcock, or the appliances. We measure the pressure and flow at the incoming main first, because that tells us whether the problem is coming into the house or happening inside it.

Do I have lead pipes?

If the house predates about 1970 there is a fair chance some of the original supply is lead, often the section between the boundary and the internal stopcock. It is grey, soft, and gives a dull sound when tapped. We can tell you in a minute when we are there.

Will a new supply fix my combi running cold?

It will if the supply is the limiting factor, and often it is. We measure before recommending, because if the flow is fine then the problem is somewhere else and a new supply would be money wasted.

Do I need permission from the water company?

For a new or replacement supply connection, yes, and there are notification requirements under the water regulations. We deal with that side of it.

How disruptive is it?

There is a trench from the boundary to the house, so it depends what is on top of it. We talk that through before you commit, including reinstatement.

Can you just replace the stopcock?

Yes. A seized or weeping internal stopcock is a common small job and worth doing before you need it in a hurry.

Poor flow, old lead, or a stopcock that will not turn?

Tell us the age of the house and what you are seeing at the taps.
